‘Using stem cells to treat injured athletes’

The Department of Health & Exercise Science presents a seminar by Christopher J. Centeno, M.D , from Regenerative Sciences Inc. (RSI), Centeno-Schultz Clinic, Westminster. The title of his presentation is, “The Use of Adult Mesenchymal Stem Cell Injections in Sports Injuries: Clinical Experience.” Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC’s) have been used in many animal models to effectively treat injuries of cartilage, bone, tendon, and ligament. These multi-potent cells can be derived from the bone marrow or many other tissues as resident cells.
They can be cultured to larger numbers using simple lab methods. Here we present numerous imaging (3.0 T MRI) case reports in the area of percutaneous cartilage, bone, lumbar intervertebral disc, and ligament repair. New techniques for helping injured athletes avoid orthopedic surgery while decreasing recovery times will be presented.
