Interesting study results out of the CSU Orthopedic Research Center from Wayne McIlwraith, Dave Frisbee, and John Kisiday on knee micro fracture surgery. In this Equine study, using cultured bone marrow derived stem cells in addition to micro fracture offered superior healing compared to microfracture alone. The repaired knee cartilage tissue was significantly firmer and had higher levels of aggrecan, a molecule that provides compressive stiffness to the cartilage. I’ve known about this study for some time and am glad to see the results presented at the AAEP convention. Congrats to the CSU team on a well done investigation! This is the same team that determined that using adipose derived stem cells for arthritic knees didn’t work as well as bone marrow derived stem cells (2006). Second study in 2009.
