Regenexx-ACL Procedure Featured in Outside Magazine

Regenexx-ACL procedure

The Regenexx-ACL Procedure, our groundbreaking  treatment for knee ACL tears using precise injections of the patient’s own stem cells was just featured in Outside Magazine. It’s a well-balanced piece of journalism for a new technology. As you may have guessed, Orthopedic surgeons are quite skeptical that they may have to give up 70-80% of ACL surgeries to a precise guided injection of stem cells. However, that’s why we just submitted an imaging analysis research paper and are recruiting right now for an ACL study in which we’re offering free care to those patients who agree to be randomized.

To review, our knee ACL procedure is best for those patients with ACL tears that are less than 1 cm retracted (the ends pulled somewhat apart). We also see quite a few patients whose ACLs are not retracted back, but are just severely stretched throughout. I saw one of these patients yesterday. His ACL fibers were just “exploded in place”, meaning they were all still intact, but had gone from a normal parallel appearance to a wavy mess of a ligament that was enlarged. His ligament looked very similar to this ACL we treated with stem cells. We also treat many patients with partial tears. Most patients can get back to sports quicker than if they had an ACL surgery, but some of the more severe ligament tears have similar healing times. The big difference is ending up with a ligament that we believe is much more like the original equipment, rather than an artificial ACL ligament which is too steep. The other advantage is the ability to also inject and treat the newly discovered ALL ligament, which helps the ACL control the knee in rotation. No surgery right now is addressing this ligament.

As I’ve always said, at Regenexx we’re not just playing with magic stem cells, but creating a new medical specialty-Interventional Orthopedics. Thanks to Outside for recognizing that we have a disruptive technology in our ACL treatment, one that we believe, once adopted by many physicians, will starkly reduce ACL surgery rates.
