Non-Healing Fracture Treatment Two Case Study
Dr. Centeno’s Analysis:
Shannon is a 38-year-old physician’s assistant who fell over her dog at night and had a fracture of the distal humerus (upper arm bone) and needed surgery to install a plate (ORIF). Her post-operative X-rays showed a failure of healing of the bone (non-union). This can happen in smokers and other patients (Shannon smokes cigarettes). She tried a bone stimulator, which failed, and at nine months after her fall, her surgeon wanted to operate again. Instead, we injected her stem cells into the fracture site.
Outcome:
Within five weeks after the injection, the break had healed. Four months after the shot, her surgeon decided that the area had healed well enough to cancel the surgery. She has returned to all activities.
Images/Data:
Below is her pre-stem cell injection X-ray (top image). Notice the open fracture line despite the hardware and screws. The bottom X-ray was taken five weeks after cells were injected into the fracture site. Notice the healing and “coming together” of the fracture site.
