Chronic Bursitis Treatment
Find out if you are a candidate for the Regenexx procedure to treat bursitis.
Bursitis is a condition in which fluid-filled sacs near a joint–called bursae–become inflamed, causing pain and sometimes swelling. Under usual conditions, the bursae are flat and contain very little fluid. When they are injured, they become inflamed and swell with fluid, causing pain and pressure on the surrounding tissue. Joints affected can be the shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle or knee, among others. Factors that can lead to bursitis include:
- Overuse or repetitive motion of the joint
- Poor physical condition
- Bad posture
- Injuries such as twisting an ankle or falling
- Gout
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Infection
Bursitis can affect anyone, but older people, athletes and manual laborers are especially susceptible to developing the condition.
