The Regenexx Knee Procedure

  • One area at the back of each hip is numbed and a small marrow blood sample is taken through a needle. Blood is also taken from a vein in your arm. Does this hurt?
  • These samples are sent to our ICMS certified lab where we isolate the natural growth factors in your blood. We also isolate the mesenchymal stem cells from your marrow sample.
  • A few days before we place your cells back in the joint you may receive an injection to prep the joint in your knee.
  • For the re injection procedure, your knee is cleaned and numbed. Your cells are injected back into the joint.  Since exact placement is important, we use either fluoroscopy or ultrasound guidance to place the cells.
  • After we inject your cells, you need to remain in a specific position that promotes cell attachment in the damaged area in need of repair (for approximately 10 minutes).
  • Over the next few days, you will be instructed as to how quickly you can resume normal activities. Bracing will often be used to help take weight off the area while allowing you to remain as active as possible.  The downtime is usually substantially less than any surgical procedures you may be considering.
  • After your first injection, we use two protocols.  The first involves two additional injections of your own growth factors to aid healing.  We also may use an alternative protocol that involves several more fly-in/fly-out procedures to place more cells in the joint.  All of our procedures are generally fly-in/fly-out or walk-in/walk-out if you’re local.
