For Dr. Southern, becoming a physician began by refusing to follow treatments that doctors recommended for his back pain, including bracing, pain medications, and retiring from performing as a professional dancer. Subsequently, he spent years discovering alternative treatments that allowed him to learn to live with – and not be limited by – back pain.
While working in Europe, he discovered a particular type of physician who seemed to have an intuitive understanding of musculoskeletal injury and its biomechanical cause and effect. They were doctors of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr Southern is now board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (Physiatry) with additional board certification in Sports Medicine and Pain Medicine. As a rehabilitation physician, avid athlete, and former professional dancer, Dr. Southern diagnoses and treats injuries that affect how his patients move. His treatment plans aim to restore health and increase fitness.
His overriding goal is to help all patients – from professional athletes and dancers to weekend warriors – stay as active as possible.
