Regenexx-PL Disc Procedure as an Alternative to Surgery

High dose steroids are commonly used to treat low back pain and leg pain caused by low back surgery. As pain management physicians, we wanted better tools in our toolbox of what we could offer patients as a low back surgery alternative. As a result, we began using platelet lysate instead of high dose epidural steroid injections years ago, hoping to avoid many of the risks of high dose steroids. What are the advantages of a lumbar epidural with the Regenexx-PL Disc Procedure:

  • Platelets contain growth factors that can help new blood vessels grow. We believe poor blood supply is at the heart of many patients with chronically pinched low back nerves.
  • Because of the ability of platelets to help healing, the amount of anti-inflammatory used in these procedures is about 1,000,000 times less than traditional lumbar epidural steroid injections. This special nanogram dose is more similar to the normal physiologic dose and in animal studies has shown to help stem cell function, rather than inhibit it like high dose steroids.
  • Unlike PRP, which based on our lab experience causes stem cells in culture to grow less quickly, platelet lysate accelerates stem cell growth. This is because all of the growth factors in the platelets become immediately available to the local stem cells.
