Regenexx Helps a Couple Avoid Surgery and Start Dancing Again

  • Patients’ Names: Marie and Don
  • Age/Age Group: 64 and 73, respectively
  • Body Part: knee and shoulder, respectively
  • Condition/Injury: arthritis and rotator cuff tear, respectively
  • Treatment: Regenexx-SD, which uses bone marrow concentrate that contains stem cells
  • Doctor: James Leiber, DO, Regenexx Tampa Bay

Both Marie and Don were professors — she in statistics and he in mathematics — but they also shared a love for dancing. However, one day Marie noticed that even little things like putting weight on her knee while dancing became painful. It would lock in place for hours at a time.

Her doctor determined there was a chondral flap getting caught in the joint as well as significant arthritis. The conventional treatment option was a knee replacement, but Marie didn’t want to do that.

She sought out James Leiber, DO, at Regenexx Tampa Bay, because she’d read about the regenerative medicine work of Chris Centeno, MD. After Dr. Leiber reviewed her case, he felt the Regenexx-SD procedure, which uses bone marrow concentrate that contains stem cells, would work best for Marie.

“I can do the things I couldn’t do before the procedure,” she says. “I can put weight on the bad knee, I can push back, I can move forward. It has very good functionality.”

The other thing Marie and Don love to do together is kayak. But Don had pain in his right shoulder that wouldn’t go away even with physical therapy. Dr. Leiber determined he had a rotator cuff tear and recommended the same procedure Marie had — but using a concentrate of Don’s own bone marrow on his shoulder, of course. Based on Marie’s success, Don agreed.

“I can do anything in life that I really want to do,” he says. “I have essentially full range of motion. I really couldn’t be more happy with what happened.”
